During the
June 2005 Refresh, all data from your current machine (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.) will
be transferred to your new Dell computer. To make it easier to transfer all of your
important files to your new computer, begin saving and transferring all your saved files
and documents into your "My Documents" folder.
Be sure to save ONLY data files,
and not application files into this folder. Do not save application folders or specific programs to
the "My Documents" folder. These applications will not work
properly on your new computer unless they are reinstalled.
How do I archive my files?
To learn more about archiving files to CD,
click here to download the Backing Up Your Data to CD
handout.
In this handout, you will learn how to backup your data and
which files/folders to backup.
Where is my data saved?
Most people save their data into the “My Documents”
directory. There is an icon on your desktop to access the
“My Documents” folder. To make it easier to transfer all of
your important files to your new computer, begin saving and
transferring all your saved files and documents into your
"My Documents" folder. Delete all other files that you do
not need. Be sure to save ONLY data files, and not
application files into this folder. Do not save
application folders or specific programs to the "My
Documents" folder. These applications will not work
properly on your new computer unless they are reinstalled.
NOTE: All machines must be
in your office on the scheduled date for the PC Refresh 2005 Rollout. Although it is preferable, you do
not have to be present, but if the machine is not available when your refresh is
scheduled, another date will be set. All procedures chosen by UNIT for data transfer will
be performed on your machine at your department's scheduled time. All Power On Passwords will need to be deactivated to allow
access for old data transfer.
